STUDENT QUESTION

Is ethical hacking legal in India?

SHORT ANSWER

Yes, when you have written permission from the owner of the system you test. Hacking without permission is a crime under India's IT Act, even "just to check".

Over chaiChecking your own lock: fine. Checking the neighbour's lock at night: not fine. Hacking works the same way.

A LITTLE MORE

A little more detail.

  1. What makes it legalPermission in writing, before you start. Companies hire ethical hackers to find weak spots before criminals do, and the agreement says exactly what may be tested.
  2. What makes it a crimeGetting into any account, phone, Wi-Fi or website that isn't yours without permission. Yes, the neighbour's Wi-Fi too. Sections 43 and 66 of the IT Act, 2000 cover it, with fines and jail time.
  3. Where beginners practiseIn labs built for it: your own virtual machines and practice sites made to be attacked. That is how our Cyber Security course works, with Kali Linux, Wireshark, Nmap and Burp Suite.
  4. Bug bountiesMany big companies invite people to find bugs in their apps, under their own written rules, and reward them for it. That is ethical hacking too, done in the open.
